What Captopril is used for
- Captopril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, kidney problems caused by diabetes, and to improve survival after a heart attack.
Do not take Captopril
- If you’re allergic to the active substance, other ACE inhibitors or any other component of this medicine.
- If you have ever had a reaction which included swelling of the hands, lips face or tongue where the cause was unknown.
- If you have diabetes or impaired kidney function and you are treated with the blood pressure lowering medicine Aliskiren.
- If you are more than 3 months pregnant.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor about all your medical conditions before taking this medicine including:
- If you have liver problems.
- If you have kidney problems or are on dialysis.
- If you have heart problems, especially involving the heart valves.
- If you are taking medicines that reduce your immune system.
- If you have recently suffered from excessive diarrhea or vomiting
- If you have diabetes.
- If you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus or scleroderma.
- If you are taking Angiotensin II receptor blockers or Aliskiren.
Possible side effects
- Stop using this product and seek immediate medical help if you develop rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Serious side effects:
- Angioedema characterized by swelling of the face, hands and feet, rash, and difficulty breathing.
Common side effects:
- Dizziness
- Rash

- Medicines that lower blood pressure
- Aliskiren
- Diuretics (water pills)
- Potassium supplements
- Lithium (for mental disease)
- Medicine that suppress your immune system
- Medicines for gout
- Medicine to treat irregular heartbeat
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory painkiller (NSAIDS)
How to take Captopril
- Take as indicated by your doctor.
- Take at the same time each day.
- Take with or without food.
- The usual dosing range is 6.25 – 25 mg, 2-3 times per day. Your doctor may increase it to a maximum of 150 mg per day.
How to store Captopril
- Store at room temperature below 86°F (30°C).
- Keep this medicine out of reach of children.
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the package. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
