- Common cold, flu or viral infections since it is active against infections caused by bacteria only.
- This is a prescription only medicine.
How To Use:
Take this medication by mouth, usually every 12 hours or as directed by your doctor.
If you are using the tablet form of this medication:
- Take it with food to help increase the absorption of the drug.
If you are using the suspension form of this medication:
- Take it with or without food.
- Shake the bottle well before each dose.
The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy.
In children:
- The dose is also based on weight.
Acute Bronchitis and Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis:
- 200 mg orally every 12 hours for 10 days.
Acute Community-Acquired Pneumonia:
- 200 mg orally every 12 hours for 14 days.
Acute Maxillary Sinusitis:
Adult:
200 mg orally every 12 hours for 10 days
Pediatric:
Infants under 2 months:
- Safety and efficacy not established.
Infants 2 months – Children 12 years:
- 5 mg/kg orally every 12 hours for 10 days; individual doses not to exceed 200 mg.
Children over 12 years:
- 200 mg orally every 12 hours for 10 days.
Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis:
Adult:
- 100 mg orally every 12 hours for 5-10 days.
Pediatric:
Infants under 2 months:
- Safety and efficacy not established.
Infants 2 months – Children 12 years:
- 5 mg/kg orally every 12 hours for 5-10 days; individual doses not to exceed 100 mg.
Children over 12 years:
- 100 mg orally every 12 hours for 5-10 days.
Skin/Skin Structure Infections:
- 400 mg orally every 12 hours for 7-14 days.
Acute Otitis Media:
Pediatric:
Infants under 2 months:
- Safety And Efficacy Not Established.
Infants 2 months – Children 12 years:
- 5 mg/kg orally every 12 hours for 5 days; individual doses not to exceed 200 mg.
Children over 12 years:
- 200 mg orally every 12 hours for 5 days.
Gonorrhea:
Uncomplicated gonorrhea in men and women; rectal gonococcal infections in women:
- 200 mg orally once.
Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections:
- 100 mg orally every 12 hours for 7-14 days.
Warnings And Precautions:
Before taking cefpodoxime tell your doctor or pharmacist if you:
- Are allergic to it; or to penicillins or other cephalosporin antibiotics (such as cephalexin); or if you have any other allergies.
- This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of:
- kidney disease.
- stomach/intestinal disease (such as colitis).
- This medication may cause live bacterial vaccines (such as typhoid vaccine) to not work well.
- Tell your health care professional that you are using this medication before having any immunizations/vaccinations.
- Kidney function declines as you grow older. This medication is removed by the kidneys.
- Elderly people may be at greater risk for side effects while using this drug.
- During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed.
- Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
- This drug passes into breast milk and could have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
