Product Description:
- DEPAKINE belongs to a family of medicines called antiepileptics.
- This medicine is used to treat different forms of epilepsy in adults and children.

How To Use:
- Always take this medicine exactly as directed in this leaflet or as instructed by your doctor or
- You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Instructions for proper use:
- Treatment with DEPAKINE should be initiated and monitored by a doctor who is a specialist in the treatment of epilepsy.
- Treatment should not be prescribed for girls, adolescents, women of childbearing age except in the case of ineffectiveness or intolerance to other treatments.
- If no other treatment is possible, valproate will be prescribed and dispensed under very strict conditions (indicated in the pregnancy prevention program).
- A specialist must reassess the need for treatment at least once a year.
Posology:
- The daily dose to be used is determined and controlled individually by your doctor.
The dose is usually divided into:
- 2 doses per day for children under 1 year of age.
- 3 doses per day in adults and children over 1 year of age.
- It is recommended to take your dose with meals.
Warning And Precautions:
- Depakine can seriously harm the unborn child if taken during pregnancy.
- Children exposed to valproate in utero are at high risk of severe cognitive and motor developmental impairments and behavioral disorders (up to 30 to 40% of cases) and/or malformations (about 10% of cases).
If you are a girl, a teenager, a woman of childbearing age:
- Your specialist doctor will not be able to prescribe valproate, except in the case of ineffectiveness or intolerance to other treatments;
- If no other treatment is possible, valproate will be prescribed and given to you under very strict conditions in a pregnancy prevention program aimed at avoiding pregnancy.
If valproate has been prescribed to you and you are a woman of childbearing age, you must:
- Use at least one effective method of contraception, without interruption, for the duration of your treatment with depakine.
- Your doctor will discuss this with you but you should also follow the advice given in this leaflet.
- Make an emergency appointment with your specialist doctor if you are considering pregnancy or if you think you may be pregnant.
- Do not stop taking depakine without being told to do so by your doctor; it may make your condition worse.
- Make sure that you have read and understood the patient information leaflet and have signed the annual care agreement form that will be given to you by your specialist doctor who is experienced in the treatment of epilepsy.
- Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
