Febuxostat 80 mg tablets


What Febuxostat is used for : 



  • Febuxostat is used to treat high levels of uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia) in patients with gout.

  • It is used for the chronic management of gout.

  • It is also used to treat and prevent high levels of uric acid in the blood in adults with blood cancers who are on chemotherapy.


Do not take Febuxostat : 



  • If you’re allergic to the active substances or any other component of this medicine.

  • If you are currently being treated with Azathioprine or Mercaptopurine.


Warnings and precautions :


Talk to your doctor about all your medical conditions before taking this medicine including:



  • If you have liver or kidney problems.

  • If you have heart problems, a history of heart disease or stroke.

  • If you are being treated for cancer or if you have a health problem called Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.

  • An increase in gout flares may occur at the beginning of therapy. Do not stop taking this medicine.

  • People with heart disease taking this medicine might have a higher rate of heart-related deaths.

  • Liver problems have been reported with the use of this medicine. 


Possible side effects : 


Stop using this product and seek immediate medical help if you develop rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.


Serious side effects:



  • Liver failure

  • Life threatening skin rash called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome


Very Common side effects : 



  • Elevated liver enzymes

  • Nausea

  • Rash

  • Joint pain


Other medications and Febuxostat : 



  • Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking. 

  • Do not take this medicine with Azathioprine or Mercaptopurine at the same time. 


How to take Febuxostat   :



  • This medicine is intended for adults above 18 years of age only.

  • Take as indicated by your doctor.

  • The usual recommended dose is 40 mg once daily.

  • Your doctor may increase it to 80 mg once daily if you do not achieve target.

  • The dose may be increased further to 120 mg once daily if your doctor sees fit. 


How to store Febuxostat  :



  • Store at room temperature 68 to 77°F (20 to 25°C).

  • Protect from light.

  • Keep this medicine out of reach of children.

  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the package. The expiry date refers to
