Product Description:



  • Memantine is used to treat the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD; a brain disease that slowly destroys the memory and the ability to think, learn, communicate and handle daily activities). Memantine is in a class of medications called NMDA receptor antagonists.

  • It works by decreasing abnormal activity in the brain.

  • Memantine may improve the ability to think and remember or may slow the loss of these abilities in people who have AD.

  • However, memantine will not cure AD or prevent the loss of these abilities at some time in the future.


How To Use:


Starting Dosage:



  • 5 mg once daily.


Target Dosage:



  • 20 mg once daily.


Titration:



  • Dosage increased by 5 mg daily in weekly intervals as tolerated.


Titration Schedule:



  • Week 1: 5 mg daily.

  • Week 2: 10 mg daily (5 mg twice daily).

  • Week 3: 15 mg daily (5 mg one time and 10 mg one time daily).

  • Week 4: 20 mg daily (10 mg twice daily).


Warnings And Precautions:



  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to memantine, any other medications, or any of the ingredients in memantine tablets, capsules, and oral solution.

  • Ask your pharmacist or check the manufacturer's patient information for a list of the ingredients.

  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking.


Be sure to mention any of the following:



  • Acetazolamide (Diamox); amantadine; dextromethorphan (Robitussin, others); methazolamide (Nepatazane); potassium citrate and citric acid (Cytra-K, Polycitra-K); sodium bicarbonate (Soda Mint, baking soda); and sodium citrate and citric acid (Bicitra, Oracit).

  • Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects.

  • Tell your doctor if you have or have a urinary tract infection now or if you develop one during your treatment with memantine and if you have or have ever had seizures, difficulty urinating, or kidney or liver disease.

  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking memantine, call your doctor.

  • If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking memantine.
