What is chlorpheniramine?
- Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose.
- Chlorpheniramine is used to treat runny nose, sneezing, itching, and watery eyes caused by allergies, the common cold, or the flu.
- Chlorpheniramine may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Chlorpheniramine side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Chlorpheniramine may cause serious side effects. Stop using chlorpheniramine and call your doctor at once if you have:
- fast or uneven heart rate;
- mood changes;
- tremor, seizure (convulsions);
- easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness;
- feeling short of breath; or
- little or no urinating.
Common side effects of chlorpheniramine may include:
- dizziness, drowsiness;
- dry mouth, nose, or throat;
- constipation;
- blurred vision; or
- feeling nervous or restless.
How To Use:
Children: the dose will be calculated by the doctor, according to the child’s age or body weight:
- 1 month to 1 year 0.25 mg/kg.
- 1 to 5 years 2.5 mg to 5 mg OR 0.20 mg/kg.
- 6 to 12 years 5 mg to 10 mg OR 0.20 mg/kg.
- 12 to 18 years 10 mg to 20 mg OR 0.20 mg/kg.
- The doctor may dilute Chlorphenamine with sodium chloride 0.9% to make it easier to measure and inject the small amounts required for children.
When administered into a vein, the injection should be given slowly over a period of one minute to avoid a fall in blood pressure (hypotension) or central nervous system stimulation (giddiness).

- Talk to your doctor or nurse before you are given this medicine if you:
- Are being treated for an overactive thyroid or enlarged prostate gland.
- Have epilepsy.
